The job holder will work as a member of the Research & Development (R&D) Reduced Risk Products (RRP) team providing leadership and supporting the design, development and optimisation of RRP to meet current and future requirements as well as wider business strategy. With specific focus on the overall layout of all components (mechanical, electrical and electronics) and associated material specifications, the role requires close co-ordination with the product design and R&D Packaging teams.


Included in the key tasks are:

  • Provide the necessary expertise in materials and production methods to develop technical solutions and deliver acceptable products/prototypes in line with project objectives and business requirements.
  • Lead industrial design of reduced risk products ensuring that the overall design, component layouts, CMF (colour material finish) and other materials reflects product technical requirements and are appropriately specified with associated tolerances.
  • Support the generation/advancement of novel material technology to ensure regulatory acceptability and working towards current and future sustainability requirements.
  • Develop internal and external testing and verification procedures for the overall design including but not restricted to colour, surface and internal component wear and leakage and dimensional tolerances.
  • Manage vendor relationships with external partners and coordinate material development and qualification activities with key suppliers across a number of different internal product development projects.
  • Seek to maximise Intellectual Property creation


Skills and Knowledge required

  • Advanced degree in Mechanical Engineering, Material Science or closely related major scientific/engineering discipline, or equivalent scientific ability based on relevant experience and education.
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in a variety of R&D product/material development roles or other related experience.
  • Good working knowledge of AutoCAD or 3-D drawing software (Solidworks) is desirable.
  • Excellent working knowledge of Windows, Word, Excel and PowerPoint
  • Must possess excellent verbal and written communication skills in English, other languages are desirable.
  • Ability to work effectively under pressure, prioritising and handling multiple tasks, whilst maintaining attention to detail
  • Ability to demonstrate initiative
  • Excellent organisational skills with the ability to meet tight deadlines
  • Well-developed interpersonal and communication skills at all levels
  • Flexible ‘can do’ attitude and ability to work successfully in a close team environment
