Position Purpose 

  • Support the US Legal Director in advising JTI's US and global businesses on all legal matters to achieve corporate/commercial objectives that ensure compliance with the law and appropriate management of legal risk. Additionally, support all business functions to find the most optimal way to execute the company's strategies and goals to sustain business growth. The Legal Manager would function as the assistant general counsel, reporting to the general counsel.

Responsibilities and Requirements  

  • Support the US Legal Director in advising JTI's US and global businesses on all legal matters to achieve corporate/commercial objectives that ensure compliance with the law and appropriate management of legal risk. Additionally, support all business functions to find the most optimal way to execute the company's strategies and goals to sustain business growth.
  • Support the Legal Director in building and maintaining strong working relationships within the JTI US businesses, including all US legal entities such as JTI USA, Logic, PTID, USAT, JTI Leaf Services, Duty-Free, and JTI (US) Holding Inc., consignment manufacturers, etc. (collectively the "US market"). Work closely with the legal team in JTI's Americas Region, JTI HQ in Geneva, and global business services. Help the US market operate compliant with all applicable laws and deliver on its annual and strategic business goals. 
  • Enforce all relevant legal policies & procedures and provide training and presentations as required. Advice on the US market's activities related to global JTI guidelines, including packaging layouts, health warnings, marketing material restrictions, consumer programs, ingredients, and flavors. Provide the US market with advice on other legal issues such as competition law, sanctions, anti-bribery, anti-harassment, data protection, dawn raid, etc. Manage and advise on contracts, terms, conditions, contract templates, intercompany agreements, etc.
  • Support the Legal Director by providing legal advice to the business on the tobacco regulatory regime in the US, including rules and regulations from government agencies such as the FDA and the FTC and oversight by Congress and other federal and state governmental bodies. In addition, assist in managing JTI USA's compliance with the 1998 Master Settlement Agreement, including annual certifications, filings, and payments.  
  • Assist the Legal Director in supporting all US market and global functions, including the General Manager, People & Culture, Marketing & Sales, Finance, Corporate Affairs & Communication, Global Tax, Logistics, Quality Assurance, Procurement, Business Development, Information Technology, Global Supply Chain, Global Leaf, etc. In addition, support the Legal Director's management of the US market's crisis management team and the development of the US market's enterprise risk management.
  • Assist the Legal Director in managing all litigation, including participating in discovery, motions, pleadings, and strategy. In addition, help manage the relationships and costs of external counsel within the framework of the annual legal budget.
  • Support the US market legal entities' efforts to ensure proper corporate governance and compliance with its legal obligations regarding licensing, registration, reporting, and taxation following applicable laws such as the PACT Act and State tobacco reporting requirements. Assist the Global Tax Team in reducing the US market's legal risks related to taxation, reporting, and the supply chain distribution of JTI products.

 

Education and Qualifications

  • JD from a US accredited law school and admission to a state bar (with the ability to become licensed as in-house counsel in NJ, if not otherwise licensed in NJ).
  • 2+ years of practice in a law firm or in-house.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
