What this position is about - Purpose:

 

To act as the legal advisor for JTI Malaysia’s market and Australia+ business operations as well as Singapore market (whenever needed); and to assist the Asia Pacific Regional Legal team in advising on commercial and regulatory matters as well as other issues affecting the JTI/JT group of companies in Malaysia, Australia+ and Singapore (whenever needed).   

 

 

What will you do - Responsibilities:

 

  • Assisting the business with developing an improved understanding of tobacco and commercial     regulations, as well as improved capability to communicate/discuss/align on legal issues in a timely and appropriate manner
    • • Advising on commercial law, including contracts and commercial issues
      • Drafting, reviewing and negotiating general commercial contracts (e.g. trading, purchasing, supply,  service, distribution agreements, etc.)
      • Advising the business on product regulation, including reviewing developments and legislation on relevant legal and regulatory matters and informing the business
      • Advising on packaging and marketing activities
      • Advising the business on employment, data protection, consumer protection, competition, anti-corruption and other relevant laws to ensure compliance.
  • Whenever possible, taking on corporate secretarial duties and advising the business on corporate governance related issues 
  • Advising and assisting on emerging products’ matters and regulatory affairs
  • Developing and drafting arguments in defending the company’s interests and advocating certain corporate positions
  • Overseeing and assisting on legal challenges 
  • Advising on matters related to JTI’s operations in Malaysia and Australia+ as well as Singapore (whenever needed), including corporate governance, leases, contracts, industrial relations and labor matters.
  • Assisting the Regional Legal team on business projects or initiatives for the Asia Pacific markets, developing and rolling out Legal functional initiatives, such as training, conferences, know-how, etc.

 

 

Who are we looking for - Requirements:

 

  • Has a Bachelor/University Degree in Law 
  • With at least 8-10 years of experience as a Malaysian qualified lawyer
  • Excellent legal & analytical skills appropriate to experience
  • Experience in drafting & reviewing general commercial contracts in English
  • Basic awareness of employment, competition & intellectual property (i.e. trademarks, copyright, etc.) law principles
  • Dynamic, proactive and flexible, with an ability to identify and act upon opportunities with confidence
  • Experience in dealing with government and regulatory authorities
  • Working knowledge of commercial law, company law, competition law and of course tobacco control laws (preferably working as an in-house lawyer in FMCG or as consultant in international legal firms/consulting firms)
  • Effective negotiation skills: Ability to apply knowledge of legal drafting to produce standard business critical agreements and adapt creatively where necessary
  • Willing to work in KL, Malaysia
