Position Purpose

Our organization is presently seeking an Indirect Tax Manager to become a member of our Finance team.


The primary purpose of this position is to handle the complete indirect tax management (customs, excise, sales and use tax) of U.S. group of entities JTIUSA, JTI US Holdings, JTIDF, JTINA, PTID, USAT, and Logic. Capable of managing all customs aspects of import and export processes, including but not limited to TIB, Drawback, first sales and origin management. Also familiar with excise at both a federal level as well as at state level. Will ensure timely and accurately filling of the periodic indirect tax returns as well as reporting of indirect tax provisions. Handle indirect tax audits and requirements with governmental authorities as first point of contact. Monitor current and impending changes to indirect tax regulations and ensure the business is continuously compliant.


This position is located in our Teaneck, NJ Office.


Responsibilities and Requirements

  • The Indirect Tax Manager will handle the indirect tax position of U.S. group of entities including JTIUSA, JTI US Holdings, JTIDF, JTINA, PTID, USAT, and Logic. All in coordination with the Regional Customs & Excise Director, to whom the indirect tax manager will report. 
  • Customs - coordinate and control import and export processes, including but not limited to: Actively managing TIB procedures in relation to a outsourced consignment manufacturing procedures; Actively manage drawback process incl reconciliation and submitting request; Manage origin ensuring US production meets origin requirements in relevant FTA's; manage FG imports and related first sale compliance.
  • Tax compliance: Setting up and maintaining indirect tax governance in line with JTI global standards. Actively pursuing improvements and efficiencies of IDT related processes & procedure. Takes responsibility for:
    •    the preparation, including supporting files, and filing of periodic indirect tax returns for all entities, e.g.  excise tax, sales and use tax,         where applicable in coordination with external tax firms;
    •    Handling (including preparation) of indirect tax audits and other tax requirements with governmental authorities.;
    •    Actively managing Indirect Tax refunds and outstanding receivables of all entities.
  • Actively engaging with internal and external business partners to ensure customs & excise aspects of operations are continuously considered and improved were possible. Stimulates and establishes good working relationships with internal and external business partners including a.o. customs authorities, tax consultants, customs brokers and a 3rd party consignment manufacturer.  
  • Local Indirect tax developments:  The indirect tax manager:
    •    Will proactively monitor and follow up on US indirect tax developments and trends that impact the US business;
    •    Supports the business to ensure that the relevant changes to processes and procedures in the supply chain are implemented in                 compliance with IDT legislation;
    •    Assists in broader US business development activities


Functional Skills

  • Skilled in financial applications (SAP and MS Excel) is preferable but not a must.  Fluency in English with excellent written and oral skills.


Qualifactions & Experience

  • 4 year BA/BS Degree in Accounting/Finance/Business/Law. 
  • Minimum of 3-5 Years of experience  with Customs and excise duties, experience with Sales taxes is considered a pre (Experience is gained preferably in a multi-national FMCG organization).
