Position Purpose

This position is responsible for anticipating and shaping changes in the Operating Environment for us in the US market and leaf operations, which create commercial risk and competitive opportunity for the company. The incumbent must develop and implement strategies and programs which shape the Operating Environment in a responsible, proactive manner.
In support of the above objective, the incumbent must develop a comprehensive understanding of the social, economic, political and regulatory environment in which the company operates, and of the special interest groups, organizations, and media which influence and shape public opinion in the market.
This role is responsible for RMC, LFC and Logic.


This position is based in our Teaneck, NJ office. 



  • Anticipate changes in the company’s Operating Environment which create commercial risk and competitive opportunity, by identifying key public affairs and legislative issues which have potential impact on the company’s business. Ensure anticipated changes, risks and opportunities are communicated in a timely fashion to the JTI USA General Manager, Leaf Supply USA and the VP Corporate Affairs & Communications, and alternatively, to other members of the Management Team.
  • Develop and direct the implementation of political, regulatory, and media engagement strategies, in partnership with functional counterparts, through which the Operating Environment will be shaped to minimize commercial risk and secure competitive advantage, and to ensure that the company’s positions and views are presented in a timely, effective and consistent manner.
  • Direct the development of political, regulatory, and media stakeholder maps which identify the groups or individuals who influence and shape public and government policy and opinion. Develop and maintain close working relationships with appropriate business organizations and political contacts to facilitate communications on industry and company related issues.
  • Manage and monitor USA's regulatory environment, particularly in regard to FDA regulations. Ensure that efficient processes are in place to collect and evaluate developments in tobacco regulation in the U.S. Engage with regional and HQ SRA, Legal and Communications functions to develop or adapt JTI views and positions regarding regulatory issues which have significant impact on the company’s Operating Environment, to ensure consistency with the parent company positions. This includes ensuring that parent company colleagues are updated on US issues and programs as they develop.
  • Works with other industry participants to develop and implement programs that protect the company’s and the industry’s ability to profitably market and sell its products, and to protect smoker’s rights to purchase and use those products.
  • In close cooperation with the respective regional and or local management team, ensure constant awareness and improvement in knowledge about compliance within JTI. Along with other functions such as HR, Finance, Legal etc., the incumbent will secure proper adherence to the JTI Code of Conduct and all Corporate Policies & Procedures by the employees in his / her area.  
  • Recruit, motivate and guide the professional development of the team reporting directly and indirectly to the incumbent.
  • Manage various tasks and projects as they arise and upon manager’s request.



Functional Skills

Mastery of the MS Office suite and related programs is essential. 


Qualifications & Experience

  • Minimum BA with specialization in political science, law, economics, marketing, public relations, communication. Advanced degree preferred.
  • 8+ years of experience in managing public affairs and communication issues at a senior or mid-management level. Excellent knowledge of current regulatory affairs issues required. Candidates with experience in the tobacco, pharma or other regulated industry preferred. US local market knowledge is an advantage 
  • Strong English communication skills, both oral and written. Any other language welcome.
