Legal Manager - Mississauga Head Office


Who are we looking for?

 

We are seeking a qualified lawyer (8-10 years’ experience) fluent in English to join our strong and respected legal team of six, as a Legal Manager. Qualification to practice law in Canada is required. The position is based in Mississauga, Ontario and will report to the Head of Legal, Canada.

The Legal Manager must be confident, well-organized, strategic, ambitious and a team player.  They must have determination, resilience and enthusiasm to continuously learn and build on their existing knowledge and be able to quickly forge strong internal relationships based on credibility and trust.  

They must be able to provide high quality legal advice, strategic recommendations across multiple business units of JTI Canada. The ideal candidate will have broad commercial and regulatory law experience, including advising on typical in-house topics such as consumer and trade marketing compliance, product liability and consumer care, competition law, sanctions, anti-bribery, EHS, commercial contracts, etc.  They will instruct and manage outside counsel and ensure these services are provided to a high standard and within budget.   

The Legal Manager will also be expected to initiate and coordinate local and/or global projects to, for example, accelerate productivity by way of increased efficiency, simplification and digitization.  They will also work in cross-functional agile teams on strategic commercial and legal projects.  

 

Responsibilities

 

  • Providing general commercial and regulatory advice and support to designated marketing, sales and research teams and consumer complaints teams.     
  • Providing legal support to the Privacy Officer and keeping abreast of privacy, cybersecurity and artificial intelligence legislation. 
  • Reviewing and drafting a variety of agreements, policies and other documents.
  • Supporting or, in areas of delegated responsibility, leading audits, inspections or interactions with regulatory authorities.
  • Preparing and conducting local trainings on various topics.
  • Anticipating, monitoring and analyzing legislation, assessing impact to JTI (cross-functionally, in some cases) and keeping management informed.  
  • Working collaboratively as part of the Legal team and wider business agile teams to support new matters/projects.
  • Contributing to the overall efficiency of the team by assisting the line manager with ongoing priorities and tasks.

 

Qualifications

 

  • Lawyer qualified to practice in Canada
  • 8 to 10 years of legal practice, preferably with prior and relevant in-house experience 
  • Fluent English with excellent communication skills, both written and oral. Knowledge of the French language is not required but will be considered an asset
  • Ability to prioritize and manage time well
  • Ability to work in a multi-disciplinary environment and collaborate well with all members of the organization 
  • Occasional travel may be required

Compensation Package 

 

$150,000.00 - $175,000.00 CAD annually + Bonus Eligibility. 

The above reflects the target compensation range for the position at the time of posting. Hiring compensation will be determined based on experience, skill set, education and training, and other organizational needs.
