LEGAL MANAGER

 

Responsible for proactively advising JTI Indonesia on all legal matters affecting its operations to achieve corporate and commercial objectives in a manner that ensures compliance with the law and appropriate monitoring and management of legal risk. Also, will assist the Asia Pacific Regional Legal team in advising on commercial and regulatory matters as well as other issues affecting the JTI/JT group of companies.

 

As the Legal Manager, you will:

  • Assisting the business with developing an improved understanding of tobacco and commercial regulations, as well as improved capability to communicate/discuss/align on legal issues in a timely and appropriate manner;
  • Advise on commercial law, tobacco regulations and other areas including employment, IT, advertising, labeling, consumer protection, and health and safety as necessary. Particular emphasis on all business contracts such as drafting, reviewing and negotiating general commercial contracts (e.g. trading, purchasing, supply, distribution agreements, etc.).
  • Advise the business on product regulation, including reviewing developments and legislation on relevant legal and regulatory matters and advising the company.
  • Provide advice and guidance on packaging, marketing activities, and legal issues.
  • Collaborate with the Business Counsel to develop the training programs, precedents, guidance notes, and updates for management and other employees.
  • Advising the business on employment, data protection, consumer protection, competition, anti-corruption, and other relevant laws to ensure compliance
  • Internal Stakeholder Management:
    • Assist JTI Indonesia with developing an improved understanding of tobacco and commercial regulations as well as an improved capability to communicate/discuss/align on legal issues in a timely and appropriate manner.
    • Assist employees with the preparation of approval documents requiring legal review (GHE, BAPs, etc.)
    • Build and maintain strong working relationships within the Asia Region and HQ and understand business needs and strategic plans to provide proactive and valued advice.
  • External Stakeholder Management:
    • Handle regulatory complaints in coordination with the Business Counsel and external counsel.
    • Corporate secretarial duties and advice the business on Corporate Governance related issues.
  • General:
    • Advising and assisting on emerging products matters and regulatory affairs.
    • Overseeing and assisting with legal challenges.
    • Assisting the Regional Legal team on business projects or initiatives for the Asia Pacific markets, developing and rolling out Legal functional initiatives, such as training, conferences, know-how, etc.
    • Developing and drafting arguments in defending the company’s interests and advocating certain corporate positions.

 

Requirements:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Law.
  • Indonesian qualified lawyer with 5-12 years’ PQE.
  • Excellent legal and analytical skills appropriate to experience.
  • Experience in drafting and reviewing general commercial contracts in English.
  • Basic awareness of employment, competition, and intellectual property (i.e. trademarks, copyright, etc.) law principles.
  • Dynamic, proactive, and flexible, with an ability to identify and act upon opportunities with confidence.
  • Excellent communication skills in English, both verbal and written.
  • Good working knowledge of all essential computer programs like Microsoft Office and excellent writing skills in clear and concise manner;
  • Strong interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills;
  • Experience in dealing with government and regulatory authorities;
  • Working knowledge of commercial law, company law, competition law, and of course tobacco control laws (preferably working as an in-house lawyer in FMCG or as a consultant in international legal firms/consulting firms);
  • Effective negotiation skills;
  • Ability to apply knowledge of legal drafting to produce standard business critical agreements and adapt creatively where necessary;
  • Basic awareness of Intellectual Property principles (i.e., trademarks, copyright, etc.);
  • Ability to understand the tobacco business, its strategies, its people, and its organizational structures;
  • Awareness of legal and commercial risks and the ability to establish means for leading such risks consistent with business objectives;
  • Sound judgment when balancing legal risks against the business benefits, i.e. looking at the proportionality of risks vs rewards;
  • An appropriate level of maturity to provide credibility at senior levels externally and internally.
